DESIGNYOURMIND walks for searching and searching for walks

Milan - via Tortona 35 – location: Roof Garden Thermore Skywalk 2° floor 16/21 april 2008

DESIGNYOURMIND, COMPREX CUCINE with SIEMENS and IL CANTIERE, ADEK ITALIA, BUGS, B-LINE and CERAMICHE COEM are the first companions of this exciting journey that begins in Tortona 35 - by the splendid greenhouse glass terraces of Thermore Skywalk, on the second floor.

Maps, tracks and paths of this new adventure are into DesignYourMind website www.designyourmind.it from which, day by day, you can follow developments and backstage about what happens and what will be on display in the location from 16 to 21 April 2008. Not to loose the four cocktail-dinners in the evening, from 19.30 to 24.00, by invitation for journalists, designers, buyers, retailers, and design studies, in 16-17-18 and 19 April 2008.

DesignYourMind means “walks for searching” (design) and “searching for walks” (mind).

From UPTOWN - Thermore starts DesignYourMind: the program that involves interior designers, architects and visual designers in a network of partnerships, development of activities and innovative, alternative projects. DesignYourMind is a new track that involves the mind in a provocative, aesthetic, functional research in which the central subjetc is not the product but the mind that perceives it.

DesignYour Mind concept is that the searching and the making of a new design project is not less important than the product itself. It’s a trip inside the energy that causes the need for beauty and that bursts into the minds of people looking at a new design object.

If “walks for searching” means to look for traces, “searching for walks” means to set free energies. DesignYourMind is a medium among the mind energy of Designers free to travel beyond themselves - the energy of fearless companies overcoming the icons of "life styles" - the energy of an innovative network to share goals.

CONCRETE by COMPREX CUCINE in collaboration with IL CANTIERE and SIEMENS

From an idea developed by Stefano Basso - Sales & Marketing Executive for Comprex – and brought to life with the support of Cinzia Palazzetti and Gigi Rossi– Directors Il Cantiere since 2006 – the result, CONCRETE, a new revolutionary kitchen in terms of unconventional and stimulating construction materials. It is an innovative project which leads to the concept of creating a kitchen together with the house being built or being renovated. Materials typically industrial – solid and long-lasting – are already being used in top-end design projects in the construction business, but this is the first time that they are being used by who produces furniture and furnishing solutions. Comprex has gone even further: Il Cantiere and Siemens have helped us on this. A new generation kitchen, a true and tangible architectural concept, developed to offer more than satisfying consumer expectations and needs. Rigour, advanced technology, state-of-the-art formula, an innovative invention. A cement material - entirely mineral and resin free - offering excellent performance: resistance to compression up to 6 times greater than normal cement with a resistance to bending 8 times greater. Moreover, the very fine grain size allows for reproducing any type of surface texture and moulds. All of which allows for reduced thickness and subsequently a reduction in weight and on quantity of the material used compared to conventional cement. This material is the result of in-depth research carried out by one of the largest companies on the world cement and concrete market, LAFARGE, nevertheless, all its possible applications are still to be discovered and experimented: spanning from large construction projects as bridges, buildings etc. - to small bottles for performs and jewels. As this is a new material – completely unknown in Italy, it is at the dawn of its industrial use in France – alongside experimentation across various industries there is the need to develop new production plants and systems. All of which requires notable effort in terms of creativity, highly-motivated and propositional human resources, financing and marketing. Il Cantiere’s aim is to launch this cement with its exceptional properties across industrial markets which up to now were inconceivable and more specifically indoor and outdoor furnishing solutions, lighting, flooring, storage walls, bathrooms and kitchens. All of which developed and created with a high design content. COMPREX has taken up the challenge!

CONCRETE , therefore, is an experiment that is materialising. It is not a product: it is an instrument in the hands of Architects and Designers. Precious because it is architecture, exclusive because it is a limited edition. Concrete is offbeat: it does not respond to a lifestyle. It is a particle coming from the future into the present: it is the energy of the material. Concrete is “form” serving who uses it.

MOVING CHAIR by ADEK ITALIA

“Moving Chair” is a "non-chair: originality and functionality are provocations, a creation for people with a lot of imagination but able to remain “with feet on the ground ".

Brand new at heart. The innovative chair designed by Paola Ceppi is just that.

It would be impossible to imagine a piece of furniture with a design so provocative.

Not a simple variation on the classical chair theme, but a revolutionary concept, light years away from the ordinary world. An archaic form, modern monolith, sculpture-tool. A never-before-seen anti-chair, brave enough to get the most out of the modern design’s trends, leaving behind any useless embellishment and overcoming the classic four-legged format in the process.

Thus, the venture, the risk, the unconventionalism, balanced by steadiness and the utmost comfort.

A concept so original, and a design so functional, caring both about provocation and practical spirit. Abandon yourself to the temptation of Adek’s Moving Chair: while born with just two standing points, it’s born to run.

Moving Chair’s design is based on an accurate research on weight: The act of seating triggers a series of slight musculars strains to oppose the imbalances between the chair and the human body.

The balance between the human body and the chair stems from the correspondence principle of barycentres: both the individual’s and the chair’s barycentres are aligned to the same vertical axis (while horizontally, both barycentres projections are quite close).

The harmonic movement experienced while seating on a Moving Chair stimulates the organism’s physiology, allowing a minimal aerobic activity to the resting position. “Moving Chair can help reduce stress, stimulating attention and psychic balance as well; while the body’s muscles maintain a slight tension, the body is relaxed and the mind can soar free”.

Adek is currently designing an extension line of the seat, developing a project aimed to widen the range of Moving products for a total comfort living.

BUGS

We love BUGS in general, they are incredible creatures, with almost alien-like features, with designs and colours that seem to belong to different planets. Their organizational skills and social structures are logical and functional, together with their territorial strategies and architectures. They are – as the whole of nature is, after all – an infinite source of inspiration for us and not only from a design point of view. Second is the ever so colourful imaginary world of kids, crowded with fantastic creatures such as strange caterpillars, speaking crickets, industrious bees, all positive characters, which are almost spiritual and ever so genuine and simple. But that’s not all. BUGS are also unexpected errors in a software program, leading to total chaos. And it is just from chaos that new and more evolved ways of thinking can arise. In this light BUGS gains a new meaning: the awareness that there are infinite possible ways of looking at reality. The world of BUGS is clear and transparent, there is no duplicity or false-heartedness. Respect and freedom are at the basis of each and every relationship between individuals and the world around them. We firmly believe in sincere and spontaneous co-operation and we only work with people we have a good feeling with and who genuinely believe in the work we carry out together. Different structures in different parts of the nation, all of them constantly and virtually connected online (with antennas!). The vast majority of our co-ordination work, production and communication are carried out this way. We see ourselves as design "producers", in the same way as music or cinema producers. Design objects are becoming more and more a way of expressing designers’ ideas, which are not limited to just concepts of aesthetics. They are gradually coming to symbolize different ways of thinking more than just social status and functionality. A producer shares, actualises and communicates a trend of thought independently of a product’s category or classification. In every "vision" at the beginning of a project there is, in fact, a beginning. This is always essential. EGGYPOP represents the beginning of our story. You can consider it as the archetype of the essential container for all ideas and projects to come or simply the egg from which the idea of BUGS was born, just like it can be seen in the animation cartoon on our website’s intro page BUGS works with creativity, social research and design, to create modern symbols rich in emotion and style. The first BUGS’ product it’s the EGGYPOP lamp, an essential design object created to brighten indoor and outdoor spaces. EGGYPOP can be changed thanks to a series of accessories that can identify and diversify its functions or simply modify its look. This collection of accessories will be extended in the near future with more designer features and innovations from the BUGS world.

B-LINE 2008: an international project

Three adjectives to describe B-LINE: original, passionate, eclectic.

Milestones and rising stars in international design, hailing from different cultures and experiences, have put their talent, hopes and intelligence into designing the B-LINE products to create objects which are all unique in their own fields.

The eclectic use of materials has always been a feature of B-LINE products: plastic, wood, steel and leather are interwoven to create a suggestive medley of tactile and visual sensations.

Different manufacturing technologies, from injection and rotational moulding right up to armchairs produced by hand, create a variegated range of products which are not based on any standard patterns.

The B-LINE team add their own passion, enthusiasm, unconditional love of design, and last but not least, courage in their search for consistent improvement in total customer satisfaction.

Yet different interpretations of the B-LINE world describe a company able, in just the nine years it has been in business, to distribute its products in 35 countries throughout the world (and on all five continents) and represent through its collection a piece of historical and cultural design heritage which ideally embraces the last 40 years.

To highlight all these features, B-LINE this year are presenting their new collection which comprises the company’s all-time favourites and a number of new products, oozing in personality, which have a unique, international flair; projects which interpret current fashions and always fill us with excitement and, at times, make us smile.

The new B-LINE 2008 catalogue has many new features: new graphics, new products as seen through the lens of one of the most

prestigious Italian photographers (Andrea Pancino), and new co-operation with milestones and up-andcoming stars in international design. The alternating of black and white backgrounds, the omnipresent “B-LINE red”, photographs set in a wide variety of, at times unusual, places create an eclectic mix of visual evocations, where all-time favourites and new products fluctuate between elegance and easygoingness.

CERAMICHE COEM

COEM’s concept - Nature, Stone and Design - has now become a philosophy and a style for us. COEM constantly refers to these key words in every manufacturing and creative phase, seeking materials and shapes that can contribute to the broader idea of human wellbeing.

Every form of material has always been moulded to extract its vital essence, in the awareness that only in this way do objects develop their own lives and can interact with man. Skilful hands have explored the potential of natural stones, with many works bearing witness to the union between design and nature.

Coem takes its inspiration from this age-old tradition, which is universal although in certain respects typically Italian. Clay becomes natural stone and is laid to create new surfaces, sometimes soft and warm, at others sharp and bright. It plays with shapes, sizes, geometries, absorbing and transfiguring them.

With Coem’s decorative modules, Design follows in the footprints left on the stone by a lush and ancient natural world.

It all reminds us that there can be no substance without form; no content without container.

This is how stone comes to life and the elegant soul of Giunco ripples sinuously within the marble of Travertino Romano, making us forget which of the two is stronger.

The Berries in Schiefer and the metaphysical branches of Alberi in Quarzite reach upwards and accompany our gaze. Which is the more authentic of the two: the idea of the branch or the branch itself?

Signs in Schiefer: an informal reverie chalked on slate by the secret child hidden inside all and every one of us; one who likes playing in the midst of wildflowers and butterflies.

Flower in Corton: flowers yet again, materializing out of the undressed stone and coming to life in bright and modern surfaces.

Gold Leaves in Marfil: leaves that accommodate, leaves that conceal, leaves that glitter like gold.

And finally Oak in Marfil: the large tree that can reproduce itself an infinity of times, as infinite as life itself that the stone offers to the image of the tree depicted by man, as if it wants to catch hold of the magic for ever.
