Memphis srl is the owner of the brands Memphis-Milano, Meta Memphis, and Post Design, reflecting three different moments of its history.
The Memphis-Milano brand originates in the cultural movement founded in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass and a group of designers linked to him by direct acquaintance: many of them were young people who frequented or were members of his studio, along with other internationally renowned designers and architects. The movement immediately became a worldwide phenomenon, destined to end on a creative level a few years later, in 1988, when the group officially broke up.
From the Memphis experience, the Meta Memphis project came about, giving rise to two collections, in 1989 and 1991, no longer put together by designers but by artists. Meta Memphis developed the philosophical reflection on living that had characterized Memphis, taking it to extremes, producing apparently useless hybrid objects that are both artworks and furnishing accessories.
Since 1997 onwards, the Meta Memphis experience has been followed by the activity of Post Design, a production brand, but also the name of the Milanese gallery dedicated to the display and distribution of all the company’s products. Through annual exhibitions, Post Design pursues the aim of recording and documenting transformations in taste and esthetics: hence its laboratory-like, eclectic and non-homogeneous character of the collections.
The three brands owned by Memphis srl, although founded at different times, have since continued to produce the same furniture and objects, following the technical drawings provided by the designers, using the same materials and processes. In this sense, they are not reproductions, but original pieces for all intents and purposes, regardless of the year of production.
The new web platform—announced on the occasion of Fuorisalone 2020—hosts the products, archive, and history of the Memphis-Milano, Meta Memphis and Post Design brands—all owned by Memphis srl.
A trusted destination for the online purchase of the iconic items by the Memphis group, the new e-commerce site is also the place to discover the furniture of the Meta Memphis artists’ collections, rarely seen elsewhere. The exploration continues with Post Design productions, from Ettore Sottsass’s own collections, to an incredible series of 150 handmade rugs, from pieces by young designers to illustrious international names, 80 creators each with a biographical page dedicated to them in the Designers section.
For the first time online, the complete archive of the historical posters and catalogues of the Memphis-Milano exhibitions from 1981 to 1988 can be consulted free of charge, offering scans of the originals, together with the Meta Memphis catalogues and publications published since the mid-1990s by Post Design.
A chronological selection of exhibitions related to the designers who have collaborated with the company over the years and an extensive press review complete the Archive section. For interested visitors, an additional page is dedicated entirely to the history of the Memphis company and the history of its brands.
The new memphis-milano.com site therefore not only features an e-commerce section with a wide range of products, but also a platform for cultural insights into a fundamental chapter in the history of international design.
With the simultaneous launch of this new Fuorisalone 2020 in digital form, Memphis takes up the challenge of building a future with a strong online presence, while continuing to passionately cultivate direct relationships with buyers, industry professionals and enthusiasts.
