Palm weaving by the hour

This project is a manifesto showing the true value of handmade Mediterranean basketry, whose importance is often dramatically underestimated.

In this technique, there is an intermediate stage during which the artisan weaves long strips of palm, which are kept in rolls before being sewn into their final shape.
These rolls can be made as long as necessary for each project, but they can also be used as a measuring tape of hours worked.

We developed a system for these rolls to be kept closed and tight, so that their form can be shaped and reshaped, leading to the development of a range of products which are sold at an hourly rate – by the hour.

Ultimately though, what is the true value of a piece that took 10 hours of skilled work to craft, and which is filled with historical relevance and a strong cultural heritage and identity?
