He was previously a lecturer in literature at the University of Rennes 2 (1993-2000), then successively director of the French Institute of Bilbao (2000-2004), the Ecole supérieure d'art et design de Valence (2004-2007), the Ecole supérieure d'art et design de Saint-Etienne (2007-2011) and the Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon (2011-2018). He was also President of the National Association of Art Schools (ANdEA) from 2009 to 2017.

 

As part of or in addition to his professional activities, he has designed several exhibitions, lecture programmes or videos and is developing a sustained editorial and publishing activity.

 

After founding in 2013 the biannual art and critical review Initiales, co-produced by the Ecole des beaux-arts de Lyon and the Fondation Ricard, he is preparing to launch a new medium at the Ecole des arts décoratifs, in the form of a magazine that is at once printed, digital and lively.

 

Through regular collaborations, articles and articles, he has been featured in AOC, Artpress, Mouvements, L'Infini, Lignes, Les Temps modernes, Le Quotidien de l'art, Libération, Les Inrocks.  He is also the author of several critical texts, notably on Georges Bataille, and of a novel, Le Déclin de la beauté, published under the pseudonym Virgile Tavernier (collection Digraphe, Gallimard, 1994).
