DiSPAssembIy Park

For Milan Design Week 2022, NIKE presents "DiSPAssembIy Park" a circular installation in multiple senses. "DiSPAssembIy park" is created by Niket ISPA team: an experimental micro collective that actively cultivates avant-garde approaches to product design in an effort to greater creative experimentation Nike and beyond. The team reflects a willingness possessed by Nike's founders and engrained in Nike's design ethos to challenge the status quo in favor of new and better ways.

The four philosophical tenets Of ISPA are:

-Never be blocked by the first answer to a problem. IMPROVISE to see if it can be improved.

- To find the best materials you need, SCAVENGE and pull together the best available options to solve the problem.

- Your solution must PROTECT against the problem.

- ADAPT all solutions to fit their broadest potential.

"DiSPAssembly park" celebrates the ISPA Link and ISPA Link Axis, radical Steps forward in Nike's pursuit Of a circular future. Currently on View at the Vitra Design Museum as part of the exhibition "Plastic: Remaking Our World," the ISPA Link Axis is designed for complete disassembly and is held together by geometry rather than glue or cement.
This interlocking modular design, set for commercial release in 2023, embodies several circular design principles (like cyclability, disassembly, material choice, refurbishment and waste avoidance) documented in Nike's open source Circular Design Guide published in 2019. Building on previous chapters of learning like 2003's Presto Clip and 2005's Zvezdochka (designed in collaboration with Marc Newson), the ISPA Link Axis demonstrates how the quest for sustainable solutions pursued by Nike's design and innovation teams for more than 30 years can continue to lead us to new aesthetic frontiers. Conceived as a community sculpture garden and workshop, "DiSPAssembly Park" features large-scale cardboard assemblages with abstract shapes extracted from the technical drawings of the ISPA Link Axis and its predecessor, the ISPA Link (arriving June 2022), that take visitors on a circular design and development journey. Importantly, in keeping With the ISPA philosophy, the team elected to use inexpensive, locally sourced materials that may easily be taken apart and given a second life at the close of the installation — in this case, by being shredded and converted into audio files by PAN RECORDS, a multi-disciplinary record label and platform for artists.
