Stadera Design District 2026

When Milan speeds up, Stadera slows down

A different idea of Design Week in the southern suburbs of Milan

During Milan Design Week 2026, whilst the city buzzes with activity around its major design districts, Stadera is taking a different path: slower, more open, and closer to the people. Thus emerges the new edition of Stadera Design District, an independent cultural project which, for a few days, transforms the Stadera neighbourhood – on the southern outskirts of Milan – into a sprawling district made up of studios, workshops and creative spaces open to the public. Not an event to visit, but a place to wander through.

A real district
Stadera Design District is not conceived as a temporary initiative, but as the activation of an existing network: a diverse community of designers, craftspeople, creatives and cultural organisations that inhabit the neighbourhood on a daily basis. During Design Week, these places open their doors, allowing visitors to enter, meet those who work there and observe processes, practices and languages up close. Here, design is not consumed, but encountered.

The 2026 concept: Outsiders, in conversation

The 2026 edition unfolds around the theme "Outsiders, in Conversation," an invitation to consider design as a collective and conversational practice. At Stadera, the idea of "OUTSIDER" does not equate to exclusion or marginalization, but rather to a free and lateral stance, capable of generating new narratives outside the dominant circuits. "IN CONVERSATION" instead indicates a way of doing design born from dialogue: between people, cultures, professions, and different paths, in a neighborhood with a strong multicultural vocation. In a context often dominated by exhibition and commercial logics, Stadera Design District proposes a different model: a widespread, accessible, and non-commercial cultural platform, rooted in the local area and built through collaboration between neighborhood entities. An experience that invites you to slow down, get off the beaten track, and rediscover design as a social and shared practice.

Open Doors and Visible Processes

The heart of the district is the openness of its spaces. Participating studios, workshops, and cultural institutions welcome the public throughout the event, offering a variety of activation options alongside the open studio: exhibitions, micro-events, meetings, and visible processes. Attendance isn't required, just a showmanship. Complex installations aren't required, but a willingness to engage.

Stadera is a multicultural neighbourhood in the south of Milan. Here, design isn’t about taking up space, but about sharing it. During Milan Design Week, we’re opening up our studios, workshops and laboratories. Not to showcase our work, but to come together. We believe in design that is social: collective, because it stems from relationships; conversational, because it’s explained through talking and doing.

The third edition in 2026 is titled OUTSIDERS. Stadera is an outsider by geography, by rhythm, by vocation. In conversation, Outsiders brings together: those who are not at the centre of the design system; those who work on the fringes of the disciplines; those who design by talking, doing, and opening the doors of their studios.

Stadera Design District is an initiative of Milan City Council’s 5th District, in collaboration with MM Spa. It was conceived, promoted and organised by Fantastudio and Vicini di Strada: two organisations deeply rooted in the neighbourhood, with the aim of harnessing its energy and forging links between the community, design and the local area.
