Designers Simone Fattal
Simone Fattal (born in 1942 in Damascus, Syria) is a contemporary artist of Syrian origin, known for her ceramic sculptures and for a practice that spans painting, publishing, and visual arts. Raised in Lebanon, she studied philosophy in Beirut and Paris before initially dedicating herself to painting in the 1970s, in a context marked by political tensions in the Middle East.
In 1980, with the outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War, she moved to Paris and later to the United States, settling in California. There, in 1982, she founded Post-Apollo Press, a publishing house focused on experimental literature and texts related to philosophy and Middle Eastern culture.
From the mid-1980s onward, Fattal shifted from painting to ceramic sculpture, training at the Art Institute of San Francisco. Her works consist of stylized, totemic, and often archaic figures inspired by the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean and the Near East. Through essential forms and tactile surfaces, she explores themes such as memory, exile, myth, and the human condition.
In recent decades, she has exhibited internationally, participating in major events such as the Venice Biennale and presenting solo exhibitions in important museums and institutions across Europe and the United States. Her work is now recognized for its ability to combine history, spirituality, and contemporaneity, placing ceramics at the center of a deeply poetic and political practice.
