Study in Tension: The Grammar of Spatial Tension
Elena Brovelli, Spatial Tension Artist, in the design language of SAG’80, Maxalto and Arclinea
Whilst Study in Tension introduces a principle, it is in the work of Elena Brovelli, Spatial Tension Artist, that this principle takes shape as a design language. Within the SAG’80 spaces and the Maxalto and Arclinea showrooms, Elena Brovelli’s Portali pieces are integrated into layouts designed to be lived in: the kitchen, living room and more intimate areas become part of a system in which tension interacts with function, light and presence. In this context, the collaboration with SAG’80 forms part of an ongoing project. The Portals are incorporated into the project not as mere additions, but as elements capable of bringing the space to life and defining its character, contributing to the distinctive atmosphere that sets the most sophisticated spaces apart. The elements concealed within the surfaces continue to function as invisible presences: they are not revealed, but perceived through the distortions they generate. It is through this dynamic that the space expands, not through accumulation, but through intensification, introducing a sensory dimension that transcends mere formal composition. What emerges is a form of integration that fits naturally into the most advanced design contexts, where value lies not in the object itself, but in the space’s ability to respond, embrace and convey an experience. In this sense, Study in Tension does not define an outcome, but establishes a threshold: a design grammar intended to become part of the development processes of contemporary interiors, opening up new possibilities for dialogue between design, materials and the identity of the space.
