"Sotto Casa"

A collective reflection to think about Venice's newsstand of the future

In recent years, the ongoing crisis in the publishing industry has had a number of effects on the entire economic sector, an obvious example of which is the situation of newsstands, which are often forced to close or reinvent their cultural role. In a number of cities, this emergency has been tackled through initiatives aimed at cultivating and reviving the importance of newsstands as meeting places and centres of democracy.

The "Sotto Casa" round table, held on 1 March 2021, explored the ideas and opportunities that the theme of city newsstands can offer, with a view to sustainable redesign and redevelopment of Venice's system. To stimulate discussion, some successful experiences were illustrated as well as the results of a dedicated questionnaire involving about one hundred respondents from the local Venetian scene.

The "Sotto Casa" project, of which this meeting was the final outcome, was developed within the Milan School on Well-being and Sustainability in Cities 2020, organised by the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS), in collaboration with Milano2046 - the Laboratory promoted by the City of Milan, and with the participation of the 8 universities in the Milan area (Università degli Studi Milano Bicocca, Università Bocconi, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Università Humanitas, Università IULM, Università degli Studi di Milano, Politecnico di Milano, Università Vita e Salute San Raffaele), Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei and with the contribution of Edison.
