Opposites United: Intersections Beyond Boundaries

Unity is not an abstract concept. To be achieved, it requires balance and stillness, but especially a deep reasoning about the nature of synthesis and the intersections between parts. For the second consecutive year, Kia, in collaboration with Zero, brings to Milan Design Week Opposites United: a one-week program, from morning to night, featuring art installations and a public program of talks, artistic and musical performances with international guests.

“Whenever one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite on the first.” Isaac Newton’s third law of motion is a cornerstone of physics which governs our daily existence which, by definition, constantly unfolds as a game of affinities and divergences.

From the most sublime to the most trivial of theories and realms, our life experiences can be reduced to a matter of opposing forces at play. Despite its complexity, contemporary culture seems to have however found shelter in the barricade of rushed and superficial extremes, even when the evidence of human interactions consistently demonstrates how the encounter of opposites generates a crucible of transformative discourses, a crucible of transformative discourses which indeed serve to decipher our present.

Rather than finding the positive in the negative, and vice versa, Opposites United aims to trace that stillness responsible for balance. After all, the common thought that all things contradictory cannot harmoniously coexist may in fact be misleading. Transcending mere juxtaposition, the synthesis of discordant viewpoints can converge into a greater whole, that unique point towards which every escape, every gaze, tends.

For the second consecutive year KIA is returning to host Opposites United during the Milan Design Week, to offer compasses to orient ourselves through the intricacies of modernity. As the title of this year announces, “Intersections beyond boundaries”, it will achieve so with the encounter of installations, performances and talks, each encapsulating a horizon of its own, all of which embody frictions and contradictions to explore.

The ambition is not to settle for compromises, rather to investigate how balance can be found in diverging perspectives and how, ultimately, their friction can spark new ideas.
