Innovation and Design: The Nautical World Engages Designers and Architects in Redefining Maritime Interiors.
The nautical industry is increasingly enlisting designers and architects to reinterpret the interiors of vessels, fostering a new way of experiencing the sea through research and experimentation.
The 2024 Genoa Boat Show, now in its 64th edition, returns to the Palasport di Genova, revamped by Renzo Piano Workshop. This event showcases an impressive 1,052 brands and 1,030 boats across a sprawling 220,000 square meters of exhibition space, 85% of which is outdoors. The Design Innovation Award, established by Confindustria Nautica and I Saloni Nautici, recognizes commitment to innovation, research, technical formal quality, and sustainability.
“The Design Innovation Award is a prestigious recognition that helps promote the image of our industry on an international level," says Andrea Razeto", says Andrea Razeto, the President of I Saloni Nautici. "It is not only a celebration of the best projects created to date but also a glimpse into the future. The awarded projects highlight emerging trends and new frontiers in nautical design, becoming a reference point for the entire industry and inspiring new designers and companies to aim higher.”
Designers take center stage at the event, emphasizing that the nautical world is increasingly interested in the design culture applied to sustainability, the exploration of new materials, and innovative forms of living aboard vessels.
On September 20, at the Palazzo della Borsa in Genoa, awards were presented in ten categories, alongside three special prizes dedicated to Innovation, Career, and Talent, honoring projects that stood out for originality, sustainability, and social impact.
With Maria Porro serving as Jury Chair for the second consecutive year, Luisa Bocchietto on the advisory committee for the Design Innovation Award, and Silvia Botti moderating the awards ceremony, the nautical industry is directly engaging with the world of design. This partnership undoubtedly signals an increasingly integrated path for the future between traditional furniture design and the nautical sector.
"Presiding over the jury of the Design Innovation Award for the second time is an honour," said Maria Porro, "It is not only the word 'Salon' that connects our two worlds, there are many common points. But at the same time there are many differences and specific needs of the two fields, furniture design and yacht design. And it is within these differences that we can grow together. That is why this friendship, between Salone del Mobile and Salone di Genova, is so important. I want to thank all the organisers and the President for this special occasion, and to remind you that some of the words spoken by the speakers before me - quality, research, design, being selective, innovation - are in practice the common goals of two industries that can work very well together, so I am very happy and honoured today. I also want to thank all the members of the jury: they are the ones who actually walked miles to see all the nominees."
The jury was composed of: Andrea Ratti - Executive Director MSc. Yacht Design Politecnico di Milano, Andrana Monk, founder of Monk Design, Carlo Cameli, President Yacht Club Italiano, Franco Michienzi - Director of Barche, Nabil Farhat - Director The World of Yacht, Robin Edman - Designer and former President of the Bureau of European Design Associations and Luisa Bocchietto - Architect, designer and Member of the DIA Steering Committee.
Ten award categories plus three Special Prizes - Innovation, Career and Talent - awarded to projects that are particularly distinctive in terms of originality, sustainability and social impact.
