A monumental publication retraces, for the first time, the 70-year history of the Compasso d’Oro Award and its Historical Collection

This is a volume destined to become a landmark in Italian design publishing: “Compasso d’Oro. ADI Design Museum – Historical Collection” offers, for the first time, a complete and structured account of the prestigious award and its collection, which was officially recognized by the Italian Ministry of Culture in 2004 as a “heritage of exceptional historical and artistic interest.” Curated by architect and researcher Beppe Finessi, published by Treccani, and with graphic design by Leonardo Pertile, the book is produced by the ADI Compasso d’Oro Collection Foundation in collaboration with ADI – Associazione per il Disegno Industriale and ADI Design Museum.

With 1,040 pages, 2,275 images including projects, sketches, and photographs, and more than 50 essays, the volume – available in both Italian and English – is the result of over three years of work. It retraces seventy years of innovation, creativity, and design culture, offering readers a rich, in-depth overview of the evolution of design in Italy.
The book is structured in three main sections: the first explores the role of the ADI Design Museum as a cultural institution and research center; the second is dedicated to the Albo d’Oro (Golden Roll), presenting all awarded projects from 1954 to 2022, complete with a new timeline and critical notes for each entry; the third offers a critical reflection on design as a social, cultural, and economic phenomenon, in dialogue with art, philosophy, industry, and innovation.

Rounding out the publication are over fifty essays by leading scholars, designers, and curators, alongside exclusive interviews with prominent figures in the fields of design and museology. A monumental editorial project, created to document—and preserve—the history of an Italian excellence that continues to shape the future.
