An exhibition that reconsiders order, nature, and material intelligence through wood veneer. Grain patterns that resonate across paired surfaces suggest a more supple sense of balance beyond the rigid logic of modernism

During Milan Design Week, YASUTA Veneered Surfaces & Design presents Symmetry / Asymmetry, an exhibition that reconsiders the idea of order through wood veneer.

Rather than treating symmetry as a fixed rule, the exhibition approaches it as something that can emerge from difference, fluctuation, and the singular character of a material. In this sense, veneer becomes an especially suggestive medium. Even when cut from the same tree, no two sheets ever share exactly the same expression. Each surface quietly bears traces of growth, climate, and environment.

A key point of reference in the exhibition is the traditional technique known as bookmatching. By opening two adjacent veneer leaves like the pages of a book, a composition of grain patterns appears that responds from side to side. The symmetry created here does not result from strict uniformity. Rather, it arises from the dialogue between natural irregularity and human composition, and within that apparent balance, difference remains vividly alive.

The exhibition also proposes a quiet distance from the modern desire to control and standardize the world. In its place, it suggests another way of seeing, one that embraces imperfection, nuance, and relationship as values. Through veneer, what emerges is not the idea that beauty exists despite asymmetry, but that beauty may arise precisely because of it.

Symmetry / Asymmetry is more than a presentation of material. By reconsidering how design has perceived nature, it points toward the possibility of a gentler and more sensitive form of order beyond the rational certainties of modernism.
