Balloon Museum opens in New York

Lifestyle — 07 July 2026

The travelling project that transformed inflatable art into an exhibition format opens its first permanent U.S. venue with works by renowned international artists

Founded in Italy in 2021 by Lux Entertainment, Balloon Museum has transformed inflatable art and immersive installations into a travelling exhibition format that has attracted more than eight million visitors across Europe, North America and Asia. After touring 23 international cities, including Paris, Singapore, Rome and Miami, the project is now taking a major step forward with the opening of its first permanent venue in the United States, inside New York's historic Tin Building. The opening is scheduled for July 15 with “DAYDREAM - Air Becomes Art”, an exhibition that invites visitors to enter a suspended world where air, light, sound, colour and movement become artistic materials. More than a traditional exhibition, it is an interactive sensory journey that turns visitors into active participants, exploring the boundary between reality and imagination.

Among the featured artists is Marina Abramović, presenting Snowy/Windy/Spring on Planet Z, an immersive installation filled with inflatable grass and artificial snow, conceived as an otherworldly landscape suspended between childhood, breath and imagination. Alongside her, Martin Creed brings Work No. 3883: Half the Air in a Given Space to New York, a transparent room filled with blue balloons that makes the volume of air visible, while Alex Schweder, with Our Breath, Her Joy, transforms breath, light and architecture into a giant mirrored sphere that appears to come alive in space. Thom Kubli, with Black Hole Horizon, uses compressed air and soap bubbles to turn sound into matter.
The exhibition continues with participatory works such as There, Where I Am Absent by Boris Acket, where visitors complete the work with their own reflection, and ADA by Karina Smigla-Bobinski, a helium-filled sphere that visitors move through the space, leaving charcoal marks on the walls, ceiling and floor. Completing this suspended landscape is The Carousel by Valerio Berruti, which reimagines the traditional carousel through oversized fibreglass birds in a poetic reflection on childhood, time and freedom.

The New York opening marks an important milestone in the growth of Balloon Museum. What began as an Italian project has become one of the most recognisable names in the international world of immersive exhibitions. It confirms the success of a format that combines contemporary art, spectacular installations and audience participation, taking the museum experience towards increasingly engaging and interactive forms.
