miart x Fuorisalone: Strangers in Milan

Lifestyle — 31 March 2024

"Art and design have always had many points of contact, I personally do not believe much in labels and divisions, so for me it is quite natural that these two worlds contaminate each other," says Nicola Ricciardi, Artistic Director of miart.

'Strangers Everywhere', reads the title of the next Art Biennale in Venice, which opens right at the same time as Milan Design Week ('April is the cruellest month', T.S. Eliot argued with foresight). In Milan, too, more and more international artists and collectors are putting down roots. And gallery owners are no exception: in the last four years alone, at least half a dozen foreign galleries have opened their own offices in the city.

Below is a selection of five galleries selected for this itinerary

Ciaccia Levi

The gallery, founded in Paris in 2013 by Nerina Ciaccia and Antoine Levi, has a transgenerational slant: it supports the work of established, rediscovered and young emerging international artists. In 2020, the gallery moves from Belleville to Marais, and in 2022 it opens a new location in Italy, in Milan, to develop only shows and multi-layered projects that, starting with works presented in the context of group exhibitions or fairs, complete the dialogue with invited artists.

Gregor Staiger

Galerie Gregor Staiger opened its permanent gallery at 3 Via Gioacchini Rossini in 2021, an exhibition space located before entering the courtyard where the current gallery is now located. Situated in the quadrille del Silencio neighbourhood of Milan, the gallery has already presented numerous exhibitions and special projects in Milan. Also known as the casa degli artisti, this incredible building housed many famous artists as well as the legendary gallerist Alexander Iolas, most famous for working with leading surrealist artists like Max Ernst, René Magritte, or Victor Brauner.

Peres Projects

Founded by Javier Peres in 2002, Peres Projects is a contemporary art gallery promoting contemporary international artists to a global audience. The gallery represents and supports a diverse group of artists throughout their careers, who often demonstrate inter-disciplinary, and experimental practices.

The program focuses on nurturing ambitious projects by the represented artists, in dialogue with leading institutions and scholars, with the goal of expanding their presence internationally. Since the gallery’s inception, it has operated project spaces and presented important exhibitions of contemporary art internationally. Currently it has locations in Berlin, Seoul and Milan.

Cadogan Gallery

Cadogan is an independent contemporary art gallery with spaces in London and Milan. For over forty years our mission has been to represent, support and curate the work of a diverse roster of emerging and established artists. We care deeply about longevity, developing the careers of our artists and the journey of our collectors.

In 1980, we opened the doors to our first gallery in South Kensington, London. In 2023, we added a new international perspective to our distinctive exhibitions programme by opening a gallery in Milan. With an artist-focussed approach and strong aesthetic identity, the new space highlights the works of artists that have evolved with us since the gallery's founding, as well as a new generation of emerging artists.
