Once hidden from view, speakers, consoles and sound systems are stepping into the spotlight as integral elements of interior design
There was a time when home technology was meant to be invisible. Speakers, amplifiers and sound systems were concealed within furniture, built into walls or designed to blend discreetly into their surroundings. Today, the opposite is true: sound is claiming its place as a defining element of interior design. Speakers, consoles and stereo systems are no longer simply devices for listening to music, but objects to be seen - even showcased. With sculptural forms, sophisticated materials and an increasingly fluid relationship between technology and furniture, sound is helping shape the character and identity of domestic spaces.
The shift was particularly evident at Milan Design Week 2026, from YONT’s Brutalist DJ Booth and Joe Colombo’s Carrello Musica, reissued by Codiceicona, to Baxter’s Syd sound console and Stack Furniture’s shelving systems with integrated speakers, as well as Bang & Olufsen’s collaboration with Antolini on Beosound Haven.
